FAQs
What causes ADHD?+
The exact pathophysiology of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is not clear. With that said, several mechanisms have been proposed as factors associated with the condition. These include abnormalities in the functioning of neurotransmitters, brain structure and cognitive function. While scientists aren't sure exactly what causes ADHD, they contend the likely causes are a combination of genetic, environmental and slight differences in the chemistry and hardwiring of the brain.
What's the difference between ADD & ADHD? +
ADHD is the official, medical term for the condition — regardless of whether a patient demonstrates symptoms of hyperactivity or not. ADD is a now-outdated term that is typically used to describe inattentive-type ADHD, which has symptoms including disorganization, lack of focus, and forgetfulness. People diagnosed with inattentive ADHD do not always exhibit hyperactivity.
Mental health professionals in the United States use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to diagnose all psychiatric conditions; the latest version divides ADHD into three types:
- ADHD predominantly inattentive presentation
- ADHD predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentation
- ADHD combined presentation
How is ADHD tested?+
There's no single test to diagnose ADHD. Instead, we rely on several things, including:
- Personally watching the child or adult Questionnaires or rating scales that measure symptoms of ADHD
- Psychological testing
- Interviews with the parents, relatives, teachers, or other adults as needed
The doctor needs to see how much a person’s symptoms are affecting their daily moods, behavior, productivity, and lifestyle habits. To rule out other conditions, a doctor may ask for additional tests.
How is ADHD treated? +
Behavioral therapy, family therapy, exercise, and meditation have all shown promise in reducing ADHD symptoms. Stimulants such as Concerta and Adderall are the best-known and most widely used ADHD medications. Between 70-80% of ADHD diagnosed patients have fewer ADHD symptoms when taking these fast-acting medications. Non-stimulants were approved for the treatment of ADHD in 2003. Although prescription stimulant medications can effectively manage the symptoms of ADHD, some people may choose a more natural route.
